Satan’s Whiskers in East London has taken the number one spot in the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list for the first time.

The Bethnal Green site, which features taxidermy decorations and a daily-changing drinks menu, topped the UK-based rankings at an awards ceremony held in London last night (8 July) by BigHospitality’s sister title The Morning Advertiser.

Half of this year’s list, voted for by hundreds of bartenders, bar owners and drinks writers, is based outside London with Middlesborough gaining its first entry with The Nuthatch at 36.

Seven entrants are in Edinburgh, with last year’s winner Bramble ranked at number four.

The remaining top spots went to sites in London, with Soho’s Bar Swift (2), Hackney’s Three Sheets (3) and the American Bar at The Savoy (5) rounding out the top five.

Of the list, which is now in its second year, Top 50 Cocktail Bars editor Nicholas Robinson says: “People across this country want the sorts of drinking experiences in their home towns and villages that they may have had when visiting the likes of London or any other major city in the UK or the world. It is such a thrill to see bars like the Nuthatch are paving the way for this to happen.”

The winners of three specialist categories were also announced. Brighton’s L’Atelier du Vin was named Best Newcomer, London’s Opium won Best Bar Team, while Lost & Found Leeds Club took the One to Watch award.
