Allegra chef Patrick Powell has announced he is taking over the space formerly occupied by Marcus Wareing's The Gilbert Scott within St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.

Called Midland Grand Dining Room, it will be the third collaboration between Powell and renowned London developer and hotelier Harry Handelsman.

The pair originally worked together at Chiltern Firehouse where Powell was head chef for four years and then continued their partnership when he went on to open his first restaurant, Allegra, located on the 7th floor of Manhattan Loft Gardens in Stratford, in 2019.

Originally a dining and coffee room during the building's tenure as Midland Grand Hotel in the late 19th and into the 20th century, the space will reopen early next under Powell’s culinary direction.

The space has been vacant since early 2021 when Wareing said he was closing The Gilbert Scott because its lease had ‘naturally expired’ after a decade of trading. At the time he said that it was always the plan to operate the restaurant space for a maximum period of a decade.

Also involved in the project will be Parisian architect and designer Hugo Toro, who was responsible for the recent redesign of Booking Office 1869 at the hotel. Toro’s design studio with lead the refurbishment of Midland Grand Dining Room.

The dining room will retain a bar as well as private dining spaces.
