Benugo has partnered with the Natural History Museum to introduce 'science-based' carbon labelling for cakes and chilled food served in its cafes and restaurants at the museum.

The data and carbon labelling system has been developed and administered by Foodprint from Nutritics, and highlights levels of carbon impact from A-E of each product, with A being the most climate-friendly choice.

Benugo, which oversees all catering operations at the Natural History Museum, says that following the pilot Foodprint will be expanded to other sites in the café and restaurant group's estate and applied to its entire own-brand range of food and drink.

“We have been working on this project for some time, and are proud to launch this scheme with NHM and Nutritics,” says Shane Kavanagh, commercial director at Benugo.

“We want to give our customers the option of making informed choices to reduce the carbon emissions associated with chilled food purchased from our sites at the Museum.

“Using the Nutritics Foodprint solution enables us to use software we already successfully deploy for our nutritional calculations. It allows us to treat carbon in the same way we treat a nutritional value, applying it to every food and drink item for which we have a recipe.”

Late last year, Benugo launched a 100% carbon neutral coffee menu across all of its venues.

Created in partnership with ClimatePartner, the menu allows customers to see the carbon footprint of the most impactful hot drinks so they can make an informed choice, with all emissions offset into certified projects as part of a wider carbon reduction program.
