Further details have been released about Korean chef Akira Back’s upcoming debut UK restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair in London.

Due to open in the spring, Akira Back will be an all-day dining, 148-cover restaurant that will serve dishes inspired by Back’s Korean heritage and his modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine, further influenced by his international travels. Dishes will include the AB tuna pizza, comprising a wafer-thin crust, umami aioli made with ponzu sauce, tuna sashimi, micro shiso and white truffle oil.

The restaurant will be one of a number of dining and drinking concepts overseen by Back at the Hanover Square hotel, which has 50 guestrooms and 77 private residences. Other options will include Dosa, a 14-seater counter-style restaurant serving contemporary Korean dishes ‘using seasonal ingredients and cutting-edge techniques’.

The hotel will also house contemporary cocktail bar ABar Lounge which will serve a selection of small dishes alongside its cocktail programme, and its rooftop sibling ABar Rooftop.

“I am delighted to bring my dining experience to London for the first time," says Back.

"My mission statement has always been to create unforgettable memories for guests by revolutionising the dining experience through one-of-a-kind dishes and gracious service. These values are deeply engrained in Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s philosophies, a Group who delivers the highest quality guest experiences around the world. It is the perfect partner for my first UK venture.”

Born in South Korea and raised in Aspen, Colorado, Back enjoyed a successful career as a snowboarder before an injury forced him into early retirement. He currently operates 25 restaurants in cities such as Paris, Las Vegas, Dubai, Beverly Hills, San Diego, Doha, Toronto, Singapore, Seoul and more, with additional destinations coming soon.
