Fresh off the boat: high-profile US chef Eddie Huang to bring his Baohaus brand to UK
Huang’s menu of Taiwanese steam buns will be available for a 13-week residency in Sessions’ Islington venue Neighbourhood and Brighton’s Shelter Hall, from 26 May and 7 June respectively.
Sessions holds the exclusive UK rights to Baohaus and plans to scale it across its 150+ delivery locations later this year with delivery available ‘across London’ at the end of the month.
A former lawyer, Huang opened Baohaus in New York city in 2011 and now operates a further site in LA. He is an important voice in US food media having encouraged significant discourse around food culture and representation.
His Fresh Off The Boat memoir - which details his struggles with identity growing up in the US, the strong food culture in his home (his parents were immigrants from Taiwan but his family's ancestral home is mainland China) and his brief spell as a lawyer - was turned into a major sitcom by 20th Century Fox Television for ABC.
“I’ve always been so proud of what we achieved in New York and LA. I created Baohaus to tell my family’s story through food at a time when Taiwanese food was not readily available, and now I can’t wait to bring my food to the UK through this partnership with Sessions,” Huang says.
The news follows Sessions’ partnership with Ivan Orkin, another high-profile US-based chef.
Best known for his NYC restaurant Ivan Ramen, Orkin ran residencies at Sessions’ two food halls in London and Brighton in preparation for a launch across its over 100-strong network of delivery kitchens later this year.
