Nando’s rolls out energy recycling system
The system, which has has been rolled out to 14 other sites, was created by Dext Heat Recovery to filter and recycle heat produced by cooking.
Nando’s has worked with the Lancashire-based energy firm since 2009, when the operator began saving energy by collecting heat from its grills to heat water.
Nando’s UK & Ireland head of sustainability Sam McCarthy said the technology has contributed to reducing CO2 emissions and helping the business meet its net zero target of 2030.
“Recovering heat in this way is a no brainer,” he said.
“It's good for the environment, it saves energy, and it all happens in the background. We don't need our customers or colleagues to do anything differently.”
He added that the business continues to look to trial new technology and is keen to share it with other operators.
In November 2021, Nando's announced it had reached the first major step in its goal to reach net-zero direct emissions by becoming carbon neutral across its scope 1 (direct ), scope 2 (power-related) and scope 3 (indirect) sources.
Strategies announced by Nando's to help it reach its net zero target include increasing the number of plant-based menu items, and switching over to renewable energy sources.
