McCain Foodservice Solutions’ (McCain FS) inaugural Streets Ahead Market will take place this weekend at London’s Gipsy Hill Taproom with nine start up traders set to feature.

The one-day market on Saturday 23 September will mark the culmination of the first year of the McCain FS Streets Ahead programme, which launched in June last year.

The initiative was born out of a partnership between McCain FS and street food membership organisation KERB+ with an aim to provide individuals from less-advantaged backgrounds with the opportunity to bring their dreams of becoming a street food entrepreneur to life.

A total of 12 participants received investment from McCain FS of between £3,000 and £10,000 to help their businesses grow, having successfully completed the Streets Ahead programme.

Since winning, the participants have been attending workshops with KERB+ to get them market ready, with nine of the operators now preparing to debut their business idea to the public at the Streets Ahead Market.

They include Bahaa Khdair, owner of Syrian toastie brand Sojok; Kemi Ogunlana, who runs Nigerian concept Kemi’s Kitchen; and Ozayr Sheikh of fusion food brand JamaiKorean.

“On behalf of McCain FS we're delighted to be able to support our first Streets Ahead cohort of successful hospitality entrepreneurs by creating an opportunity for them to trade at a bustling street food market,” says Mark Hodge, McCain Foods marketing vice president.

“This gives participants hands-on experience in the food service industry, a chance to refine their new skills and is a celebration of the launch of their own street food businesses.

“We look forward to sharing this spectacular showcase of food and encourage others in the industry to come along and support them at the event.”

The event is ticketed at £10 plus booking fee, which includes vouchers for two portions of food and a free KERB beer. To find out more and book your tickets, click here.
