Cardiff-based restaurateurs Phill and Deb Lewis are to close their sustainability-focused outdoor restaurant Kindle, describing the decision as ‘a reflection of the current industry struggles’.

The pair, who launched Kindle back in October 2021, confirmed that the restaurant’s final service would take place this Sunday (7 January).

In a statement posted on Instagram, they said: “It is with significant sadness that we will be closing the doors to Kindle for the final time this Sunday.

“We have worked tirelessly to create a beautiful, sustainable restaurant in the city, but due to a number factors currently being experienced by the industry as a whole, we cannot maintain any longer.

“This decision is in no way a reflection of the outstanding food produced by the kitchen team or sensational service by the front of house team, but a reflection of the current industry struggles and a worrying pattern as we see multiple business closures up and down the country.”

Housed on a former warden’s bungalow on the edge of Sophia Gardens in the heart of Cardiff, the Lewises first announced plans for Kindle back in 2019 following a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised £43,000 to help transform the rundown property.

Bolstered by more than £350,000 of further investment from the founders, it eventually launched in the autumn of 2021, offering outdoor-only seating and serving a menu of small plate dishes cooked over fire.

The restaurant, which has worked closely with local farmers, gamekeepers and gardeners to use ethical produce with a huge emphasis on provenance, was shortlisted for the Sustainability Award at the 2022 National Restaurant Awards.

“We hope that there will be a place for Kindle in the future,” the couple added.

“But for now, it’s a very sad and difficult goodbye.”

The Lewises also own Dusty’s Pizzeria and neighbourhood bistro Nook in Cardiff, which both continue to operate.
