The Sustainability Award: call for entries

Have you turned your kitchen into a plastic-free zone, overhauled your menu to put plant-based dishes centre stage, introduced a successful socially inclusive recruitment policy, collaborated with a local producer for an ingredient normally sourced from overseas or launched a menu designed exclusively to showcase surplus food?

If so, you could be in with a chance of winning the Sustainability Award at the Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards 2019. All that’s left to do is shout about the incredible changes you’ve made.

The Sustainability Award, in partnership with The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), recognises a restaurant that’s made a big difference with an initiative launched in the past 12 months. The award is open to all UK restaurants, not just those on the Top 100 list, so whether you’re a chip shop on the coast, an all-day diner under the arches or a bucolic gastropub, you are in with a chance of winning. It’s not who or where you are that we’re interested in, but the impact you’ve made with a project in 2018/19.

For the chance to win the Sustainability Award, entrants are required simply to tell the SRA in approximately 250 words about a sustainable initiative they have introduced in the past 12 months that fits with the SRA’s 10 key areas of innovation - supporting global farmers, valuing natural resources, treating people fairly, feeding people well, celebrating locality, sourcing sustainable seafood, serving more vegetables and better meat, reducing, reusing and recycling materials, wasting no food, and supporting the community.

Entries should include the challenge you set out to address, details of the initiative itself, and crucially what it’s achieved. If you have any stats to support your application, like how many tonnes of food waste you’ve saved or the volume of veg you’ve served, be sure to include these.

“Restaurants are hives of creativity, coming up with innovative solutions to sustainability-related challenges every single day,” says Andrew Stephen, chief executive of the SRA. “If we’re going to fix climate change, we have to fix food. Since 2012 the Sustainability Award has honoured those at the forefront of positive change from across the industry. We’re really excited about hearing from hospitality’s pioneers, and showcasing the best.”

Entries must be submitted by 30 May and will be shortlisted, with a winner being selected from a panel of judges from the SRA, Restaurant magazine and the restaurant industry. All shorlisted entries will get a free ticket this year’s very special Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards, being held at The Hurlingham Club in London on 10 June.

The Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards, created by Restaurant magazine, are now in their 12th year and recognise the best restaurants in the UK as voted for by the UK’s top chefs, restaurateurs and food writers. To book your ticket to the event, being held in London on 10 June, click here
