The founders of highly-rated Edinburgh restaurant Fhior are to close their café at the city’s Secret Herb Garden shop and plant nursery.

Announcing the decision on Instagram, Scott and Laura Smith said that the original vision for the venue had ‘been twisted, distorted and changed’ due to the restrictions placed on it as a result of the pandemic.

Launched in February 2020, Fhior Garden Café offered a simple, seasonal al carte menu with the Secret Garden also producing ingredients for Fhior and selling produce and other food-related items to the public.

“We feel that right now, finally, the amazing team there have really begun to establish its identity, build a great reputation, and create a special little place to enjoy simple food with all the correct ethos," the pair said.

“Unfortunately though, this has come too late to recover from the past year, and other factors in play have meant that it has become not possible for us to continue.”

A new operator is to take over the venture and is expected to keep on the existing the team. The last service will be on 30 August.

The husband and wife duo opened Fhior on Broughton Street in 2018 serving dishes based on high-quality local produce. The opening followed the success of Norn.
