James Ramsden and Sam Herlihy are to launch a second Sons + Daughters restaurant having acquired the former Stoney Street by 26 Grains site in London's Borough Market.

Set to open in September, this second iteration of Sons + Daughters is expected to retain the fast casual nature of brand's flagship site in Coal Drops Yard, which launched back in 2019, with a menu of stacked, premium sandwiches.

Options served at the Coal Drops Yard restaurant include a chicken S+Dwich with roasted chicken, soy-cured parmesan, pickled cucumber, gem lettuce, miso mayo and green sauce on white bloomer; the prawn S+Dwich with prawns, cabbage, prawn crackers, jalapeno & pickled ginger vinaigrette and mayo on granary bread: and the egg salad S+Dwich with eggs & miso mayo, truffle crisps and salad cress on white bloomer.

There's also a merguez baguette with spicy lamb sausage, fries, pink pickled onions, gremolata and house mayo.

Sons + Daughters launched in 2019 amid a flurry of activity in the capital's premium sandwich space.

The opening is the culmination of more than a year of planning for Ramsden and Herlihy, who had noticed that – particularly in the US - a lot of restaurant operators had begun moving into the fast-casual arena.

“We were looking around at London’s dining scene at a time when the across the market people appeared to be struggling,” Ramsden told BigHospitality at the time.

“So we began looking outside of the traditional restaurant environment and turned to looking at the trends in America, where a lot of restaurant operators were moving into fast-casual arena. And we loved sandwiches, but the London market seemed quite small in comparison to other grab and go areas.”
