Gaucho announces further openings following 'record breaking' year

The Argentinian steakhouse brand, which is part of the Martin Williams-run Rare Restaurants group, will open a huge 220-cover site on Bridge Street in Cardiff in May. It will follow the launch of the group's first site in the North-East in March, located on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle.

Earlier this week it was reported that Gaucho would open its first London opening in more than a decade​​ this summer having secured the former Wahlburgers restaurant on James Street in Covent Garden.

The announcement of these openings follow what Gaucho describes as 'a record-breaking year' with double digit earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) on turnover for the past year of £73m, up from £55m.

“I’m delighted to announce a wave of new Gaucho openings across the UK, particularly our first London opening for over a decade,” says Williams

“With all the headwinds facing our sector (in London more than anywhere else) it would be easy to focus outside of London – but Gaucho was born in the West End.”

Gaucho's latest tranche of openings comes after the group launched sites in Glasgow and Liverpool last year, which Williams says are trading strongly. 

“We have enjoyed fantastic post-pandemic trading in the capital and are beyond confident that Gaucho Covent Garden will be a triumph,” he continues.

“Our recent openings in Glasgow and Liverpool have been incredibly well received and I have no doubt that Cardiff and Newcastle will be too.”

Rare Restaurants also opened M Canary Wharf in October last year​​. Located in a 220-metre residential skyscraper known as the Diamond Tower, the 10,000sq foot venue, which was recently named Opening of the Year at Restaurant magazine​’s R200 Awards.
