Independent restaurant group Permanently Unique has toasted an ‘exceptionally strong’ trading year with revenue up by 76%.

In the year ended 25 December 2022, the group, which previously traded under the name of its Chinese-inspired restaurant brand Tattu, saw revenue rise to £26.8m from £14.6m the year before.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) grew by 23% to £4.7m (2021: £3.8m), while total profit after tax was £1.6m.

The strong performance followed the opening of Tattu London, which the group said it had performed very well.

Like for like sales over the period were up 27% on 2019, which the group attributed to a mix of increased covers and higher spend per head.

The group said that trading in the first quarter of 2023 ‘more than exceeded expectations’, but that continued cost pressures had a negative impact on covers in the second quarter.

However, it added that spend per head remains high ‘due to the celebratory nature of the Tattu experience’.

Permanently Unique currently operates five restaurants under the Tattu brand in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and London.

The group chose to rebrand as Permanently Unique earlier this year as a means for exploring new avenues of expansion, new concepts, and international opportunities.

They include the development of a new Greek-Mediterranean restaurant concept called Fenix, which is set to launch its debut site in Manchester in November.

The group is also preparing to launch its first site overseas with Tattu set to open an international outpost in Dubai in 2024.

Speaking to Restaurant back in August, Permanently Unique co-founder Adam Jones said the plan is for the group to retain ownership of the Dubai site and not launch it under franchise.
