Breddos Tacos returns to expansion trail with Stoke Newington restaurant

The new 36-cover taqueria will ‘celebrate the food culture of Tijuana and Baja California’ and serve a menu of Mexican street food dishes alongside a drinks list specialising in tequila and mezcal cocktails.

Founded by Nud Dudhia and Chris Whitney, Breddos Tacos started out as a makeshift taco shack in a car park in Hackney in 2011 and launched its first bricks and mortar restaurant in Clerkenwell in 2016.

Dudhia and Whitney launched a second site on Kingly Street in Soho in 2017​​, but it subsequently closed in late 2019​​.

The Stoke Newington restaurant will be Breddos Tacos’ first restaurant opening since 2017, although the group has continued to expand in the interim through kiosk sites at Swingers City, Swingers West End, Flat Iron Square in Bermondsey and Goods Way in Kings Cross.

It has also established two international outposts, both in Oslo, Norway.

Tijuana-born chef Ian Ciapara will lead the kitchen in Stoke Newington, with the menu inspired by her memories of growing up by the beach in Playas de Tijuana.

Dishes set to feature include Ensenada-style spicy seafood tostadas; Tijuanese carne asada; and quesa birria tacos made with dry-aged beef short rib, cheek, oxtail and brisket.

“One of the reasons why I moved to London was to share the cuisine of my country, but I never imagined that I would have a space to represent Tijuana with Breddos,” says Ciapara.

“Tijuana has it all: the Mediterranean climate for produce, the ocean for seafood, meats ripe for the parilla, craft beers, and lots of fiestas.

“Breddos Stoke Newington will celebrate the bold flavours and laid-back vibe of the city, in a space that’s designed to create good times.”

Dudhia and Whitney also own modern Mexican restaurant and bar Madre​​, which has sites in Liverpool and Manchester.
