Michel Roux Jr has won this year’s Michelin Chef Mentor Award, with Jake Jones, head chef at Forge in Middleton Tyas, receiving the Young Chef Award.

Roux, who recently closed his two Michelin-starred Mayfair restaurant Le Gavroche, was recognised by the Guide for his ‘skilled way of working with and developing the talents of young chefs’, and described as ‘a giant of the British restaurant industry’.

“When Le Gavroche closed last month, it shone a light on how many chefs have passed through its kitchens before going on to great things,” the Guide says.

Jones, meanwhile, was identified by the Michelin inspectors as a chef to watch having ‘shown great skill in leading a team who craft interesting, original dishes with a sustainable ethos’.

For 2024, five special awards were presented in total. Alongside the Young Chef and Chef Mentor awards, they included the Michelin Service Award, the Sommelier Award, and the Exceptional Cocktails Award.

Stage in Exeter received the Service Award, with the Guide describing the team’s ‘ability to interact with all diners, whilst making it all seem as if they are having great fun themselves’ as being ‘a joy to experience’.

Valentin Mouillard from Simon Rogan’s three Michelin-starred L’Enclume in Cartmel won this year’s Sommelier Award; while Ryan McHarg from The Spence in Edinburgh received the Exceptional Cocktails Award.

Elsewhere, Brett Graham’s iconic Notting Hill restaurant The Ledbury has been awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2024.

The restaurant, which re-entered the Guide last year with two stars following its post-pandemic relaunch in 2022, becomes the ninth three Michelin star restaurant in Great Britain & Ireland.

A further six new two Michelin star restaurants were announced at this year’s star revelation ceremony, with The Peninsula London’s rooftop restaurant Brooklands, led by chef director Claude Bosi, entering the Guide with two stars having only opened back in October.

Alongside them, 18 restaurants have been newly awarded one Michelin star.

Additionally, six restaurants – including Forge – received a Michelin Green Star, which highlights those at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices.
