Japanese chef Masayoshi 'Masa' Takayama will become the latest top culinary name to open a restaurant in Harrods.

The chef, who is owner of three Michelin-starred restaurant Masa in New York, will open in the famous London department store in what will be his first UK project.

The restaurant will serve Masa’s signature Japanese cuisine in what is described as a 'prime location' within the Knightsbridge store.

Masa started his chef career as an apprentice of sushi master Sugiyama Toshiaki at Tokyo restaurant Ginza Sushi-ko. He later travelled to the US and opened a small, casual restaurant serving both traditional Japanese dishes before launching Ginza Sushi-ko, a nine-seat omakase restaurant in Beverly Hills named after his mentor.

In 2004 he opened Masa and Bar Masa next door to the restaurant at the Time Warner Center. A second Bar Masa opened in the Aria Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada.

He is also the chef at Kappo Masa on Madison Avenue, which opened in partnership with art gallerist Larry Gagosian.

The move follows a number of partnerships between high-profile chefs and Harrods in the past few years, including with Jason Atherton, Tom Kerridge, Gordon Ramsay, Mireille Hayek and Angelo Musa. Most recently it partnered with top Swedish chef Björn Frantzén to launch Studio Frantzén on its fifth floor.

Further information on the new restaurant will be announced later in the year.
