More than a fifth of UK hospitality employees ‘working multiple jobs’

Findings from The Big Shift: Navigating the Future of Work in the UK​, which has been produced by scheduling software platform Deputy in partnership with independent economist Dr Shashi Karunanethy, reveals that 21% of hospitality employees are working multiple jobs.

The report, which analysed over 40 million shifts across more than 169,000 British workers, shows that 17% of hospitality workers have two jobs, 3% have three, and 1% have four or more.

Underlying this, 39% of hospitality workers report that their earnings have failed to match the pace of inflation and the rising cost of living.

Some 45% say they have no money left over after paying their living costs and a further 21% are unable to cover their current living expenses. 

Better pay is top of the wish list for 41% of hospitality workers, with 47% saying they would be motivated to change jobs by better pay.

“We’re seeing an unprecedented number of hospitality workers holding multiple jobs, a phenomenon we refer to as poly-employment, and which is a response to the cost-of-living crisis,” says Karunanethy.

“As a direct consequence of the financial challenges in the UK, we can see more hospitality workers are taking on multiple jobs to financially sustain themselves.”
